A 54-year-old truck driver from Texas died from injuries suffered in the 7:40 a.m. six-vehicle crash Thursday on Interstate 81.
Ismael Medina, of Laredo, Tex., was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cumberland County coroner, said state police at Carlisle. He was not wearing a seat belt.
The crash occurred in the left northbound lane of I-81, and as traffic slowed, Medina struck the rear of a Mazda 6 driven by Sean Kane, 24, of Carlisle. The car was pushed into the median.
The tractor-trailer continued north, hitting the rear of a Mazda 3 driven by Kyle Chiaverini, 34, of Fayetteville. The car was pushed into the median.
The truck continued on, hitting a third vehicle – a Nissan 350Z driven by Justin Horst, 37, of Shippensburg.
The truck then veered into the median, rolling onto its right side.
Horst’s vehicle was pushed into the rear of a Chevrolet Traverse driven by Michaelann Moser, 50, of Chambersburg, police said. That SUV was pushed into the rear of a Chevrolet Silverado driven by James Leid, 35, of Shippensburg.
The other drivers were transported to various hospitals for treatment, and the investigation continues.
Traffic was detoured until about 2:15 p.m., when all lanes reopened.
