Driver who lost a leg in 18-wheeler crash remains in area hospital

A 28-year-old Central Texas man who lost one of his legs after the 18-wheeler he was driving hit a guardrail and overturned remained in an area hospital Monday.

The accident happened just after 5 p.m. Saturday as Matthew May, 28, of Gatesville, headed east on FM 487 in Schwertner.

Authorities said the 18-wheeler, which was hauling more than 75 head of cattle, drifted into the westbound lane and then hit a guardrail and overturned as May attempted to steer back into the eastbound lane.

May was flown to Seton Medical Center Williamson in Round Rock.

About 20 of the cows he was hauling had to be euthanized, authorities said.
