Four dead after car drives off overpass in fiery crash
AUSTIN — Four people died Sunday morning after a fiery car crash in North Austin.
Just before 5 a.m., dispatchers received numerous calls about a car that drove off the overpass at State Highway Loop 360 and State Highway Loop 1.
The Nissan Altima hit the median, went over the edge and crashed into a building at the ArborWalks Shopping Complex. The vehicle traveled 104 feet in the air before hitting a building and catching on fire.
All four people inside the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Monday that the driver and three passengers were all men, but have not yet been identified.
“As the crew arrived, they found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames,” said Palmer Buck with the Austin Fire Department. “This vehicle had to be traveling at an incredible amount of speed for it to crash through the concrete median.”
One northbound service lane of Mopac was closed for several hours as road crews worked to repair the damage. Several nearby businesses experienced power outages due to the crash. Many businesses are closed for the day, according to a KVUE reporter on the scene.
Both the Austin Police Department and AFD are working to determine the cause of the accident. Anyone with information is asked to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at 512-974-5312.
